The CityDubai is a cosmopolitan city. Its society stable and welcoming. The city is clean and safe. It is the commercial and leisure capital of the United Arab Emirates. The jewel of the Middle East. Dubai was the first to introduce foreign ownership of land in the region, and is home to some of the finest leisure facilities in the world. Quality of life is extremely high. ClimateThe weather for the majority of the year (October to June) is lovely. It rains only a couple of times a year, mainly in winter (average 13 centimetres a year). Temperatures range from a low of about 10 degrees Celsius to a high of 48 degrees Celsius. Always wear a high protection sunscreen, the sunshine is glorious, but too much can be very painful. Check out the weather forecast on this page. MoneyThe currency is the United Arab Emirate Dirham (AED or DHS). It has been fixed to the United States Dollar at a rate of 3.67 approx to ensure currency stability. US Dollars are, however, widely accepted in hotels, shops, restaurants and taxis, as are many other currencies. Please refer to the current exchange rates on the left. LanguageEnglish is spoken by the vast majority of people living and working in Dubai. Taxi drivers, waiters and hotel staff all speak English. Arabic is the official Language of the UAE. English is the language of commerce. Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Malayalang, Farsi, Pashtu and a host of other languages are widely spoken reflecting Dubai's extraordinarily rich culture. ClothingLightweight clothing is recommended during the summer whereas suitable clothes should be worn during winter months when the temperatures can fall especially at night time. Clothes revealing one's body are considered offensive, hence they should be avoided when in public places. In the Hotel areas normal beach wear is accepted. CrimeDubai is internationally recognized as one of the top five safest cities in the world. Crimes against a person are extremely rare. Theft is similarly almost non-existent. You can expect lost goods to be returned before you ever reach a police station. CustomsThere are no exchange restrictions in Dubai and no customs duty is levied on personal effects entering Dubai. Visitors may also bring in the following free of duty: Cigarettes 2,000; cigars 400; tobacco 2kg. Alcohol (non-Muslim adults only) 2 litres spirits or 2 litres wine. A reasonable quantity of perfume. Time DifferenceThe UAE time is four hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). There are no special summer daylight savings times. TippingWhen it comes to tipping and rewarding good service, Dubai is comparable to most places throughout the world. Even where a service charge is applied, staff expect a little extra, but they do tend to go out of their way to give exceptional service. Ten percent is acceptable in hotel restaurants; for luggage porters at airports a tip of Dhs 5 or Dhs 10 is standard, depending on the amount of luggage. Taxis 10%-20% is acceptable. |
